On November 25, 2014, Bannockburn, Illinois, USA-IPC-International Electronic Industry Connection Association® today released the "October North American PCB Industry Survey Report". The report shows that the order volume increased rapidly in October, pushing the order-to-shipment ratio upward, but the sales volume remained stable.
In October 2014, the total shipment volume of the PCB industry in North America increased by 0.8% year-on-year, driving the year-to-date shipment volume to continue to improve, with a growth rate of -1.0%. Compared with the previous month, total PCB shipments decreased by 5.2% month-on-month.
The order volume of the PCB industry in October increased by 28.8% compared with the same period in 2013, and the year-to-date growth rate has therefore improved to -1.1%. Compared with the previous month, orders for October surged 15.5% month-on-month.
The order-to-shipment ratio of the PCB industry in North America rose to 1.05 in October.
Ms. Sharon Starr, Director of IPC Market Research, said: “After the PCB industry has experienced a three-year recession, the rapid increase in orders in the PCB industry in October is good news. The obvious impact is the strong rebound in the order-to-shipment ratio, which means Sales volume will rebound before the end of the year."
Data interpretation
The year-on-year growth rate and the year-to-date growth rate are instructive for exploring the development trend of the industry. The quarter-on-quarter data needs to be treated cautiously because it is affected by cyclical and short-term changes. Compared with the shipment data, the order data has more changes, and the change in the order-to-shipment ratio between month and month is not so important, unless there is an obvious trend of change for more than 3 consecutive months. Exploring the reasons for the changes in orders and shipments is as important as understanding the changes in the order-to-bill ratio.

IPC will release monthly PCB order-to-shipment ratio and PCB statistical project reports. The monthly statistical report will be released in the last week of next month.
